Biggest loser tv show

Have you ever watched the biggest loser tv show? My guess is you have at least once or you know about it. Maybe you watch it religiously each night. No matter which category you fall into, you are most likely amazed (like me) at some of the results seen. They are in many cases extreme, but is it true and safe?

Unfortunately what they do not point out in these shows is that the failure rate long term is very high. Over 90% of weight lost from the biggest loser tv show contestants will be put back on. Fast weight loss is fast weight regain. I had the chance to speak to a former contestant one on one and found out some shocking truths about some of the deceptive weight loss methods used. I originally wrote this article for the ezinearticles website, where I have earned expert author status, so rather than re writing it, I will publish it here again in it's entirety.

Behind The Scenes of the Biggest Loser TV Show

You want fast weight loss because you have seen the Biggest Loser TV Show. You have seen them train hard and lose 18 lbs in one week and yet you can't even manage 1 or 2 lbs. First I want to state some facts of why this is the case. Secondly I will reveal what a previous contestant revealed to me in person (after my careful questioning).

The contestants on the biggest loser tv show are morbidly obese. The more weight you have to lose the quicker it will come off. The reason that they are morbidly obese is because their eating and exercise habits are beyond bad. They are on the fast track to an early grave. Obviously any change where they begin to eat healthy will make a dramatic impact. They are at the opposite end of a diet that keeps them trim. Once this is implemented weight comes off quickly, but is 18 lbs in one week realistic? The more weight you carry the more you can afford to lose on a weekly basis. Safe weight loss is at 1-2 lbs per week, anything more and you risk losing muscle and water, not fat. If the human body does not get enough food, it thinks it is starving, it will eliminate whatever uses up the most energy (calories) in order to save itself. It gets rid of muscle and water. Muscles mostly consist of protein and water. Muscle, water, protein are three things you need to keep for long lasting permanent weight loss. You don't want to lose these.

These people have been feeding their bodies so much, they have trained their bodies to think that amount of food is a requirement for survival. When the food slows down, it eliminates water and muscle, which both weigh significantly. This shows up on the scales, so instead of losing the average 2 lbs or even above average 4lbs. They lose 10lbs in a week. Amazing, but still does not explain the other missing 8-10 lbs!

Here is how the conversation with ex Biggest loser tv show contestant went. He told me that before the very first weigh in, they are all told to eat BIG, that's right eat as much as they like before the weigh in. I guess this puts on a little weight in the first week that comes off quickly. Next, a few days out from the weigh in they are encouraged to eat packets of salt and vinegar chips and other salty food.

Salt makes you retain water, this will make you heavier on the scales. On the day of the weigh in they are told to drink loads of water. This is called water loading. One contestant I was told drank 6 litres of water. That is just plain dangerous and could kill someone. 6 litres consumed equals 6 kilos on the scales (that's 12 lbs) of water weight.

The following week is weigh in, they lose a few honest lbs of fat from eating well and exercise, they lose another 12 lbs from water loss alone. It looks good on television, but it is not safe or healthy.

I then asked what do the trainers do (thinking they would be against such dangerous practices), I was told they encourage it because they want their team to win.

If you really want to win, adopt a healthy mindset, a lifetime commitment to exercise and eat well most of the time. Say 80% of the time. The other 20% you can treat yourself. Don't be discouraged by these types of shows that do not reflect reality. And here is a true statistic over 90% of contestants will put the weight back on. It may make an interesting television show, but the Biggest Loser may become just that, in more ways than one.
