HMB Supplement

HMB Supplement

Optimum Mega-Potency HMBThere are conflicting stories in the scientific data and in the real world of it's effectiveness. Many people have called it a waste and many have sworn by it. It's full name is Beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate and it is a metabolite of the essential amino acid, leucine. It is anti-catabolic, minimises protein breakdown and damage to cells from intense exercise. If you are new to weight training or if you struggle to maintain your lean muscle you may find it beneficial.

In my own experience I have found HMB to be the next best thing to creatine. When I have used them combined the effects of creatine are greatly increased. The following chart is from The Journal of Applied Phsyiology. A meta analysis of all peer reviewed studies between 1967 and 2001 was conducted to compare the effectivenss of these supplements. The authors concluded "In conclusion, two supplements, creatine and HMB, have data supporting their use to augment lean mass and strength gains with resistance training.

I have tested creatine on it's own, HMB on it's own and both together. Dosage is 3 gms of HMB per day, 1 gm dosage each time in the morning lunch and evening works best. There is some research that shows no results with highly trained athletes and bodybuilders and other research shows great results. One thing for sure to get the most out this supplement, the training must be intense.

I see two reasons why it doesn't work for some
1)The dosage may have not been high enough for the trained athletes or they were not on it for long enough.

2)Just like creatine has them, they are "non responders" to this supplement. The only way to know is to try it. There are many studies that show no response to HMB compared to a placebo. There are even MORE than double the studies that show significant strength and muscle gains. Early on this supplement was very expensive, it has since become more affordable and definately worth considering.

As I mentioned before HMB has worked exceptionally well for me, it also helps with fat loss and lowering LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff). If you have not tried it, you may be missing out on valuable gains in muscle.

I use the Optimum Mega-Potency HMB
